Are Cockapoos Popular In The UK?

Dog owners and lovers are quite obsessed with which breed is considered best and most popular. If you are interested in owning a dog and don’t know which breed might be best for you, looking at the most popular breeds can help you decide. Popular dogs are often popular because they have great personality traits. So, are cockapoos popular in the UK? The short answer is yes, they are. Let’s look at some evidence to support this.

How Popular are Cockapoos?

Contents and Quick Navigation

Although surveys by The Kennel Club do not consider crossbreeds like the labradoodle and cockapoo, among others, a few other surveys show just how popular these breeds are. For instance, the family-run dog toy brand, Tug-E-Nuff, surveyed more than 2000 UK dog owners in 2022 to discover which breeds are most popular. It revealed that the Cockapoo had third place behind the Border Collie and Labrador Retriever (which unsurprisingly took the top spot).

While at the start of 2023, The Scotsman online newspaper ran a feature listing the top 10 crossbreeds in the UK and revealed Cockapoo was second to the Labradoodle.

Even if you were to take those statistics with a pinch of salt, in our experience, we see more cockapoos than any other breed when we’ve been out walking our cockapoo, Luna. This is not surprising, given that cockapoos have captured the doggy lover population around the world. Recently, Rover.com released its America’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2021 list of the top 20 across the US and the top 5 trending in 35 cities. The report found that the cockapoo was the most popular breed in NYC.

Why Are Cockapoos So Popular?

It’s not surprising that cockapoos are so popular when you consider some of the appealing aspects of these dogs.

Best of Their Parents

The best examples of cockapoos are those that inherit the best traits from the two parent breeds of a cocker spaniel and a poodle.

The Coat

One of the most important of these is that their coat takes on the poodle trait of a low shedding coat with a much softer and less densely curled coat, more like a cocker spaniel. This can help to reduce the shedding of dander and hair, which makes them an ideal choice for people with allergies.

Intelligence and Lively Nature

Then there’s the combination of the intelligence that poodles are famous for with the energetic and lively nature of a cocker spaniel that makes cockapoos great housemates. It also helps to make them a lot easier to train, even if you need to exercise patience and consistency.

Small to Medium Size

Finally, the resulting size of even the biggest cockapoos is that of the Standard Cockapoo and this is medium-sized at best, which means they are popular with a versatile range of doggy lovers.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt about it, cockapoos are one of the most popular dog breeds in the UK, and that does not look like it is going to change any time soon. If you are looking for a friendly, well-behaved, fun and intelligent dog that won’t aggravate your allergies as much, then you should consider a cockapoo.
