With the boom of designer dog breeds, picking a dog that is right for you is getting increasingly harder. We’ve started mixing poodles with almost every breed going, so even just considering a doodle-type dog is difficult, not to mention breeds that might look similar but can behave very differently.
If you’re considering your next dog but aren’t sure what’s right for you, here are some breeds similar to the Cockapoo to help you narrow your search and get your perfect pup!
Cavapoo
Contents and Quick Navigation
A Cavapoo is similar to the Cockapoo in appearance but is usually somewhat smaller. Instead of being a percentage Cocker Spaniel, the Cavapoo is a mix between a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Cavapoos can make a good choice for owners who are looking for a dog that is a little smaller and easier than the Cockapoo. Both parents of a Cockapoo are high-energy working dogs, while the beloved Cavvie was bred to always be close to its owners. They are known as alarm dogs, bred to alert you of any intruders, so you might find a Cavapoo to be more vocal. They’re lap dogs who love to cuddle but with the added intellect of the Poodle!
These easily trained little bundles of fluff are great for families who might not be the most active, but they are not a hypoallergenic breed. The fine hair of the Cavalier tends to mean they shed more than a Cockerpoo.
Cavachon
Cavashons are another family favourite. They tend to only grow up to 35cm tall and are considered a small breed in comparison to a Cockerpoo, which is a medium breed of dog. For owners looking for a lower-energy pup or have a smaller home, the Cavachon can make a perfect addition. They’re a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise – both popular companion dogs.
They aren’t as whip-smart as mixes with Poodle in them but are still easy to train. Both Cavachons and Cockerpoos love being around their family. A Cavachon is generally a little happier lounging on the couch, while a Cockerpoo will need to be more mentally stimulated.
They’re both adorable, friendly breeds, with the most significant difference being size and activity levels. Cavachons may be more suitable for first-time dog owners.
Poodle
The Poodle is one of the original pure breeds bred into the Cockerpoo, so there are bound to be many similarities. Poodles are hypoallergenic, while the Cockapoo is less so with the inclusion of the Cocker Spaniel coat, so if that is your priority, a Poodle can guarantee a lack of shedding.
They are both active breeds who love long walks, playing and running. The size of your Cockapoo will depend on both parents, while Poodles come in three sizes, Standard, Miniature and Toy.
Cockapoos tend to be a little more affectionate than Poodles however their desire to be close to their owners can lead to Separation Related Behaviours. The Poodle is hyper-intelligent, which makes them easy to train. Still, they’re also quick to train you and, if not kept mentally stimulated enough, can develop habits like attention-seeking barking.
Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel is the other 50% that goes into a first-generation Cockapoo, so similarly, it shares many traits with the designer breed. Both are considered medium-sized dogs. However, Cocker Spaniels tend to be heavier sets without the addition of the Poodle genetics.
Cocker Spaniels are people pleasers; they’re gun dogs and easy-to-train new tricks. Training should be done in a controlled area as they tend to follow their noses! Cockerpoos are intelligent too but tend to be better at independent thinking like the Poodle. Training takes a little more patience while they try to figure out shortcuts and cut corners to get their rewards.
Both breeds are highly energetic, and while the Cocker Spaniel’s coat is glossy and gorgeous, it’s not suitable for anyone with allergies.
Labradoodle
Labradoodles are probably the most similar-looking mixed breed to the Cockapoo. They generally come in the same colours and have very similar coats. Their grooming needs are similar, but the biggest difference comes in the size of the dog you get. Labradoodles can grow up to 24 inches tall, while a Cockerpoo usually only reaches 15 inches.
Labradoodles are much bigger breeds as a mix between a Labrador and usually a standard-size Poodle. They need longer walks at around two hours instead of the recommended one hour for Cockapoos, so if you’re looking for a larger, more energetic breed with a very similar temperament, they may be the one for you.
While many breeds look similar to a Cockerpoo, they all generally differ slightly in size, appearance, temperament and needs. If a Cockerpoo is a little too energetic, a Cavachon might be more suitable, or if you’re looking for a larger pooch to go on long hiking adventures, then a Labradoodle might be more suitable. The benefit of so many mixed breeds means you can find a pup ideally suited to your home and lifestyle after a bit of research.
