Are cockapoos high maintenance?
Is your Cockapoo annoying? Or is it too strong a word? Because I am a Cockapoo owner, I know Cockapoos very well, and I want to see if you find disadvantages to owning one.
Let me start by saying my Cockapoo, Luna is a fantastic dog, and my wife and I have loved her since the day she came home as a puppy. She makes our little family complete. However, I have read articles and posts on forums that claim Cockapoos can be annoying. I want to say right off the bat that I don’t find Luna annoying; yes, when they are puppies, they need lots of attention, and even now, she doesn’t like being left, but annoying, no way.
Cockapoo Personality
Contents and Quick Navigation
There is no doubt that Cockapoos are extremely intelligent. The poodle and cocker spaniel, two of the most intelligent dog breeds, appear to have produced an equally clever hybrid. As a result, they learn quickly, and you can train them to perform nearly any task.
However, it would be best to grasp their unique personality and way of thinking to get along with your Cockapoo.
However, boredom is a troublesome side of this intelligence. Make sure you have plenty of activities for your Cockapoo before getting one. These dogs require physical and intellectual engagement to avoid behavioural and psychological problems.
Sometimes owners can get annoyed with their pets because they demand so much time and energy. However, owners like this haven’t researched the best breed for them and their needs. It’s a mismatch because they need a much calmer and less demanding dog breed than a Cockapoo.
Cockapoos’ aggression or other destructive tendencies are not overly prevalent, but they can occur if the dog is neglected, mistreated, sick, or not given enough exercise and socialization opportunities.
Are There Disadvantages To Having A Cockapoo?
All aggressiveness or destructive tendencies I’ve heard about with Cockapoos tend to be because of one or more of the above reasons.
The typical Cockapoo is incredibly affectionate, lovable, and always ready for fun and games. Undoubtedly they are one of the friendliest breeds around and adore the company of their family.
However, here’s another reason why some owners see Cockapoos as annoying. This dog breed doesn’t do well when left alone for long periods. They can suffer mightily from separation anxiety, and while I can sympathise with owners who find this a genuine issue, it stems from choosing the wrong dog breed for your companion once again.
It’s not difficult to research as much information as possible about every dog breed on the planet, including hybrids like the Cockapoo. So, if owners don’t take the time to check out the dog breed they have in mind, you can hardly then blame the dog once you get them home.
Cockapoos Are Sensitive Dogs
Some might ask, “are cockapoos high maintenance” because they are sensitive dogs. Because cockapoos are so empathetic, they make excellent therapy dogs and respond to how your moods and frame of mind affect you. If you’re agitated, disturbed, upset, or insecure, your cockapoo will likely try to help. A Cockapoo, for example, will respond to a distressed owner with affection and affectionate kisses, as though they want to get to the bottom of what’s causing you pain.
Your long-term health difficulties can harm your Cockapoo, so it’s essential to address them as soon as possible. For example, a Cockapoo, frequently frightened and unnerved by its owner’s moods and unpredictability, can become a neurotic wreck. Keeping your Cockapoo calm during training and other important events would be best.
Cockapoos Love To Bark
Barking too much is not just a Cockapoo trait; many dog breeds love the sound of their voice so much they’ll bark at everything and anything.
Do Cockapoos love to bark, or is this a fallacy? Yes, Cockapoos are renowned for loud barking and being one of the most vocal dog breeds. Cockapoos use their vocal capabilities just like we do to get what they want, and this breed is exceptionally adept at letting you know what they want. This is probably why people ask are cockapoos high maintenance, because they may have heard about barking issues.
On the plus side, a Cockapoo will undoubtedly let you know if anyone uninvited is prowling around your home. Their loud barking will deter most, if not all, intruders from attempting to gain access to your home.
If you live in an apartment with the wrong type of neighbour, they might feel your Cockapoo’s barking is quite annoying.
Cockapoos Are High Maintenance
Cockapoos need a massive amount of grooming to keep their coats looking their best. This can take a lot of time and patience; it might also be annoying. However, I want to point out once again the need to thoroughly research the dog breed you choose before settling on a Cockapoo.
It shouldn’t be surprising how much grooming and clipping a Cockapoo’s coat needs if you know about the breed. Grooming and clipping can quickly become a real contention with some owners. If you don’t want or cannot groom and clip your Cockapoo yourself, the cost of visiting a professional groomer three to four times a year can get prohibitive.
Cockapoo Health Issues
Cocker spaniels and poodles, bred to produce cockapoos, are genetically susceptible to several health issues. It’s also important to note that Cockapoo puppies can sometimes come with various health issues because of poor and intense overbreeding to satisfy their high demand.
Disreputable breeding practices will ensure any genetic defects in the parent dogs will pass to their offspring. This will open the door to serious vet bills and can lead to the premature death of what should have been a healthy young Cockapoo.
Final Thoughts
So, are Cockapoos annoying, or are they just the same as every dog out there? I still say the Cockapoo is a beautiful, fantastic dog and makes an excellent companion for a family. Of course, dog breeds can be annoying if you have the wrong mindset. That’s why I stress the need to research the breed you’re considering thoroughly and in-depth.
In fairness, it can’t be the dog’s fault that you chose them, they did nothing wrong, and some dogs have a quirky personality; however, that makes them unique and a joy to be around.
If you’re contemplating becoming a Cockapoo owner, weigh all the pros and cons.
- Cockapoos are lively and full of energy.
- They have high-maintenance coats.
- They don’t like being left alone.
- They can be excessive barkers.
- They can be destructive and show aggressive tendencies (mainly because of a lack of mental and physical stimulation)
None of the above means are cockapoos high maintenance. It’s who the dog is; if those traits don’t suit you, please choose another breed.
